หลังจากช่วงที่ผ่านมามีการใช้เงินเกินกว่างบประมาณที่รัฐบาลจัดสรรให้ทุกปี
เป็นครั้งแรกที่คณะกรรมาธิการตรวจสอบบัญชีสาธารณะของสภาผู้แทนราษฎร
ทำการสอบสวนและจัดทำรายงานเกี่ยวกับการใช้จ่ายเงินของราชสำนัก
หลังจากมีการแก้กฎหมายให้สภาเข้าไปตรวจสอบค่าใช้จ่ายของสำนักพระราชวังได้
อย่างใกล้ชิด
คณะกรรมาธิการพบว่ามีการบริหารการใช้เงินผิดพลาดมากมาย
ปล่อยให้พระราชวังต่าง ๆ ชำรุดทรุดโทรม ขาดการดูแลรักษา
และยังมีคำแนะนำให้เปิดพระราชวังให้คนเข้าชมนานขึ้น
เพื่อหารายได้มาชดเชยค่าใช้จ่ายส่วนพระองค์ที่เพิ่มขึ้นทุกปี

และจัดการงบประมาณโดยเล็งเห็นผลในระยะยาว”
และบอกว่ายังมีโอกาสอีกมากที่จะเอาพระราชวังต่าง ๆ
มาโฆษณาเพื่อประโยชน์ด้านการท่องเที่ยว และช่วยเพิ่มรายได้ให้กับในวัง

The Queen should start renting out Buckingham Palace to
raise cash for urgent repairs to crumbling royal homes, MPs will
suggest today.
They say the royals need to come up with more money-making schemes, such as opening the palace to the public for longer.
And they warn that it will cost at least £50million to
restore Buck House and other landmark royal buildings such as Windsor
Castle.
The Commons Public Accounts Committee wants the
monarchy to get a better grip on finances so taxpayers do not have to
foot the entire repair bill.
That includes "exploring other business opportunities" -
which could even involve renting out parts of the palaces and
staterooms for private use.
MPs claim royal advisers have overspent so much that
the Queen's cash reserves have fallen from £35million in 2001 to just
£1million today.
Committee chairman Margaret Hodge said: "The truth is
that the palace has been living from hand to mouth for some time. The
trouble is that people are frightened, because this is the Royal Family, to address the issue head on."
On Buckingham Palace, Mrs Hodge said: "The Queen is not
there for much of the time and I find it hard to believe they can't
open the palace to the public for longer."
In October the Palace hosted its first ever football match to mark the Football Association's 150th anniversary.
And in June 2012, Gary Barlow organised the Diamond Jubilee Concert at the Palace, featuring performances by Robbie Williams, will.i.am, Jessie J and Sir Paul McCartney.
But the MPs' report says many more money-spinning
ventures are needed to help bring in funds to mop up a "dangerous and
deteriorating" backlog of repairs.
After learning that Buckingham Palace's wiring and
boilers have not been updated for 60 years, one MP commented that it
could soon become "a hard hat area".
The committee was "bemused" that repairs had been put off for years while the Queen splashed out on other things.
The report said: "The Household needs to do more to safeguard nationally important heritage properties."
It added that at the last March, 2012, 39% of the Royal estate was below what was deemed to be an "acceptable condition".
The royals got £31million from the taxpayer in 2012-13 but spent 33.3million, forcing them to dip into reserves.
The committee called for reduced royal costs and
increased income, saying it feared royal funds were so low the Queen
might be unable to pay for "unforeseen events".
